There are many options on the market for LED strip lights. Here are some important notes before getting your project started.
Can You Cut LED Light Strips?
Yes, you can cut most LED light strips, and it’s actually pretty straight-forward. Look closely at the strip and you’ll see little lines - those are the safe places to cut. This lets you adjust the length so it fits just right on shelves, cabinets, under your bed, along stairs, or in any small space.
Here’s how to do it:
-
- Power down the light strip – Always turn off the power before cutting.
- Find the cut line – Look for a small line on the strip. Only cut there (if you’re using solderless connections with certain LED strips, additional copper pad is needed for the connectors to work). Please follow the cut instructions in the spec sheet for the specific LED strip you are using.
- Use sharp scissors – Cut straight across the line to avoid damaging the strip.
- Add connectors (if needed) – If you want to use the extra piece, connect it using LED strip light connectors or solder it carefully.
- Test the lights – Plug everything in to make sure the strip still works after cutting.
Take your time and measure. If you cut the strip in the wrong spot, that section won't light up. Double-check the cut marks before you snip, and don't rush the process.
Can You Cut LED Light Strips?
Connecting multiple LED strips is a great way to light up a bigger area, like an accent wall, a long shelf, or an entire room. You have a couple of options to link them: extra wiring or solderless connectors if you want the most secure connection.
Before you connect anything, make sure your power supply is strong enough to handle all the strips combined. Each strip uses power, and if the total is too high, your lights might flicker or not turn on at all. Also, double-check that the voltage and polarity match between each strip, this keeps the lighting even and prevents damage.
If you're using connectors, press them on firmly so they don’t slip over time. For soldering, work slowly and be careful not to melt any parts of the strip. No matter which method you use, test the full setup before mounting everything in place.
How Long Do LED Light Strips Last?
LED light strips can last a long time, up to 50,000 hours. So once you install them, you won’t have to worry about replacing them anytime soon.
The actual lifespan depends on how you use them and the quality of the product. High-quality LED strips from trusted brands usually last longer. Cheap ones may burn out faster or lose brightness over time.
Here are some tips to help your LED strips last longer:
-
- Turn them off when not in use to slow down wear.
- Keep them cool by allowing airflow around the strip and by using one of our aluminium channels.
- Use the correct power adapter to avoid damage.
- Install on a clean, flat surface so they stay secure and don’t peel.
Also, avoid sharp bends that can break the strip, and keep non-waterproof versions away from moisture. Light dusting now and then helps them shine better and stay cooler, which adds to their life.
Where Can You Use LED Strip Lights?
LED strip lights are flexible, easy to install, and perfect for adding extra light or style around your home. Whether you want something practical, like better lighting for cooking, or something fun, like a soft glow in your bedroom, there’s a spot for them in almost every room. Here are some of our recommendations:
-
- Bedroom: Tuck them under your bed or behind your headboard for a soft, calming glow at night. They can also highlight the edges of your ceiling to set a relaxing mood.
- Ceiling: Outline the top of your walls or ceiling to give your room a clean, modern vibe that stands out.
- Garage: Add them over your workbench or around storage areas so it’s easier to see and stay organized.
- Kitchen: Light up the space under your cabinets for better visibility while cooking. Above the cabinets, they create a warm glow that makes the kitchen feel more inviting.
All Flexfire strip lights are compatible with our Leona® Smart Home App for convenient use and scheduling.
Are LED Strips Water Resistant?
Not all LED strip lights are water resistant, so it’s important to pick the right type based on where you plan to use them. If you're setting them up in outdoor areas, near pools, bathrooms, or kitchens, go for waterproof options.
Flexfire offers strips with IP65 and IP67 ratings, these numbers show how well the lights are sealed against water and dust. IP65-rated strips can handle light splashes, steam, and humidity, making them a good fit for bathrooms, under cabinets near sinks, or covered patios. IP67-rated strips provide even more protection and can handle brief exposure to water, like rain or hose spray, which works well for outdoor setups that might get wet.
Just make sure the power supplies and connectors you use are also sealed and safe for wet conditions. For dry indoor areas like bedrooms or living rooms, non-waterproof strips are usually better since they’re more flexible and easier to install. Always check the specs to make sure you're choosing the right option for your space.
